How to NOT cure the common cold.

i love that word “not”. When it’s put in a sentence unexpectedly, it makes you do a double-take. What? Why would we not want to cure the common cold…or any other ailment for that matter? Normally we are waiting eagerly for the next scientific breakthrough; the next remedy or medicine; the next magical affirmation or the next preventative technique. The secret is, there is no “you” to catch a cold, and therefore no “virus” with any power over you. So what do we need all these cures or preventions for?

The only You there is, Your True Identity, Knows nothing of disease or health because it’s nature is Omnipotence. One Power. Only by developing a Consciousness of Your True Identity, will You know that there is neither disease nor health. Just Isness (no opposites) because there is no “you” to be sick or well.

Think about it…Could a cold virus have power next to your Consciousness of Omnipotence? If we Knew there was only One power, could a cold have power over that One Power? But when we “catch” a cold, that’s effectively what we have admitted. If we could be absolutely convinced of One and only One Power, what chance would a measly cold virus have?

However, if we put our reliance on the “outer” we are immediately fearful of a power of disease because we have forgotten that We (that One Power) can’t be affected by disease. The “evidence” of the “fact” of disease is overwhelming. Just spend a day at the local hospital and you’ll be convinced that there is disease. But it is only a consciousness that admits disease that gets disease. The disease is not separate from the consciousness that produced it. Have you noticed, no sooner do we invent a cure for one disease, another more wierd and wonderful version pops up? Because the consciousness that “caused” the problem of disease cannot eradicate it.

Believing we can eradicate disease and believing there is a disease to eradicate is the problem!

This morning, i woke up with that familiar tickly throat and heavy body associated with the beginnings of a cold. The false self, i, would not know any better and would resign its self to spending the next few days feeling miserable. But my True Identity, I, doesn’t know anything about i let alone its erroneous activities. i falls for a self-created universal hypnotism that believes in the power of the cold virus over a vulnerable “me” that is simply tempting that same “me” to believe it. But can Infinite Omnipotent Intelligence get sick?  Being Receptive to my own Infinite Consciousness must therefore eventually nullify the effect of sickness because Consciousness of Infinity and sickness cannot coexist!

Of course, this is a totally radical Idea that the thinking human mind will reject. But we are not appealing to that mind. Our Mind is the One Mind and it is Invulnerable, Changeless and Immortal. Again, I ask you, can some piddling sickness override that?

Sit quietly, remind your Self of Your True Identity as neither well nor sick, wait for an inner confirmation that this is, in fact, True. Then watch the symptoms lose their so-called power. Omnipotence doesn’t do anything to the disease. Consciousness Reveals it was never a power in the first place. But don’t leave out the vital point…Your Consciousness Is the only Power, because Consciousness Is All there Is, and You are That!

we don’t cure the cold. we don’t even protect ourselves against it because that would admit the reality of a power separate and apart from the One and only Power, Your Illumined Consciousness which is Omnipotent. Does that mean we don’t look after ourselves? No, but it is not you, of yourself, that can do anything to prevent illness anyway. Consciousness will Reveal the “healthy” course to take as a consequence of surrendering “your” agenda.

It might take a day, a week, a month, a year or a decade. But persistent pondering and meditation on the Idea of Omnipotence will eventually reveal the Truth. You will then Be Conscious that the so-called power of the common cold was never there to cure or prevent. In the Presence of Consciousness, the “power” of a cold virus or any other ailment, cannot function. The Real You is not subject to any outside influence, therefore the common cold does not need to be cured!

5 reasons why meditation can be difficult.

StillnessI started meditating in 1974 when i was in my teens, but then i had a break of 35 years! That first experience was extraordinary. (See the full story here) but as life intervened, i got busy and i lost the knack. i tried many times over those 35 years to reestablish the connection but, for some reason, the technique i had been taught didn’t work for me anymore.

One of those times i went to a meditation class which taught visualisation techniques. We would follow the facilitator down an imaginary garden path, into a “safe place” in which we were encouraged to “rest”. This was all very well as a calming technique but it didn’t seem to get to the root cause of the unrestful mind.

About 4 years ago, i had an intense inner – what i would call a push – to take up meditation again. It was overwhelming. It dropped books in my lap. It poked my thoughts. It even woke me up in the middle of the night almost yelling “Be Still”. In bed i thought i was being still, but no, apparently i had to be still-er! Of course, it meant “stop thinking” but how? My life was so busy doing… being a mother, wife, shopper, cleaner, cook and business woman that i didn’t have time to think, let alone stop thinking!

Anyway, eventually i stopped and read the books “The Art of Meditation” and “Practicing the Presence” by Joel Goldsmith and these books changed everything. i would thoroughly recommend them to everyone wanting to meditate. They are gentle and profound. Through my own practice, i worked out some reasons why my efforts to meditate had failed.

My top 5 reasons why mediation can be difficult are:

  1. Too many rules. Every meditation teacher has their own set of rules. Setting aside 2 hours a day, at a specific time; setting up a sacred space; buying the right cloths etc. If these rules don’t fit into your lifestyle, there’s no hope that you’ll stick to them. Instead they turn into excuses.
  2. Not frequent enough. Meditation trains the mind to do something new. Would you only allocate 20 minutes a week to your exercise program? If you wanted to stay unfit – yes. If you hope to benefit, you need to allocate time every day. Make it part of your life, like brushing your teeth. (more about this in my next post).
  3. Trying to visualize. Visualization is very good for calming the thinking human mind but it is NOT a meditation to develop Consciousness.
  4. Trying to make your mind a blank. This seems to contradict the previous point, but it is just as unhelpful to force anything, whether it’s visualizing something or trying to stop thinking. Meditation is a letting go of your agenda, let go of “trying”, totally.
  5. The intent isn’t Spiritual. This is the single most important reason why meditation fails. Most meditation is trying to turn a bad outer situation into a good one. Ask yourself, are you wanting something from your meditation? Are you trying to change your life to be more peaceful, well or abundant?  All good reasons, but they are not Spiritual! They are still your agenda. i know, what else is there? The ego is a wolf in sheep’s clothing!
